Reconnecting to the Meisters of Fützen

Bill Meister wrote to Jacob Meister and the mayor of Fützen in 1963. One or the other gave my father's letter to Pfarrer Josef Stumpf (perhaps because he could read English). The pastor wrote him back on May 8th of the same year and again on February 2nd 1964.

In the first letter Pfarrer Stump explained that church records went back as far as 1640 and that Lorenz Meister had in fact been born in Fützen. Pfarrer Stump served as pastor at St. Vitus from 1960-1975.

He warned that unfortunately, he was busy with the renovation of St. Vitus church and would not be able to research the requested information right away. On the plaque found on the front of the church (2001) it says that at this time that there were extensive interior renovations with the addition of a new sacristy. Installation of a warm air heater and transformation of the outside grounds.

In the second letter, Pfarrer Stump provided more detail about Lorenz Meister and his family in Fützen. In this letter, he included a hand written family tree (three pages 1, 2, 3) that went back to the 1600's.

He writes of Conradus Meister who was born in 1625. Conradus Meister was a 'Vogt' which translates as a protector of the church or magistrate. He had had two marriages: the first to Usula Schäublin and the second to Verena (Anna) Müllerin. He had a total of 18 children between the two wives. Six of whom also had many children.
