Sauschwänzlebahn

The Sauschwänzlebahn is the name of a railroad that was built between 1887 and 1890 as a state railroad for the Grand Duchey of Baden. It's original purpose was military (for which it was never used). It was also never commercially successful. In 1975, the railroad was converted to a museum and tourist attraction. When we rode the train in October 2001, it was almost completely full.

The map to the right shows how windy and twisted the railroad had to be built. The green sections are tunnels. Because of its unusual layout, it is referred to as the piggy-tail line.

  • Wutachtalbahn e.V. - A web site related to the steam train that goes through Fützen
  • Sauschwänzlebahn - Another web site for the train that runs through Fützen. I still am not sure why there are two web sites for this railroad.
  • Some great Sauschwänzlebahn pictures taken by a guy from Switzerland.

Some pictures of the railroad.
